Tips For Improving Credit
Having credit has its ups and downs, and sometimes you can get off track and find yourself in a position where you can't pay your bills. There are many different reasons someone gets into debt and have a bad credit rating, and it's extremely easy to do sometimes. While there are at times no easy solutions for improving your credit at times, there are some tips to help repair your credit.
If you are looking for a consolidation company to fix all your credit problems, think again. While many of these programs are legitimate, they take time and often have hidden things you don't know about first. Many programs want the creditors to get desperate that you are not paying your bills and are willing to settle for less. They will tell you that when the credit card companies call you to ignore them, or tell them some story to put them off. Well, the credit card companies don't like this, and will report you to the credit companies that you didn't pay. Things like that will make your credit go way down, and even when you have finally paid them off, the fact that you were delinquent doesn't go away.
If you are struggling to pay your bills one month because you had an unexpected emergency, call your creditors right away. Many times you will find that car loans, mortgage companies and some credit card companies will allow you to defer a payment once in awhile. Some only offer this as a one time deal so be careful when using this option.
You credit card companies should offer an insurance plan of some kind, and if they do take it. The fee is quite reasonable in most cases and even none if there is no existing balance. Basically you pay a certain amount for every hundred dollars you have incurred on you credit card balance, and if there is ever a problem, you get disabled or hurt on the job, or loose your job, etc, then you don't have to make a payment for a certain number of months. You may not ever need it but it’s much better than have something happen to you or someone in your family and not be covered.
Look at your credit score at least once a year, more often if possible. Sometimes there may be something on your score that's dragging you down and you don't even know it. Some old check that bounced, or a delinquency in paying something from a long time ago. It will also give you the chance to check if any previous problems that you paid off have been cleared. Sometimes when companies are large, and have many employees, it takes awhile for proof that you paid it off to get reported to credit agencies. It's a good idea to call them if there hasn't been an update showing for 4 months, because they may have forgotten.
Whatever way you decide to repair your bad credit, beware of scammers and internet con artists. Before you sign up for any debt consolidation service do some researching to make sure they don't have any negative reporting habits. There are watchdog services that monitor these things so take advantage of them. While doing credit repair on your own may seem overwhelming, it is worth it in the long run.
